15th Annual Winter Active ROCKS WES
On Thursday, January 30, our students took part in our 15th Annual Winter Active Day. Students, staff and parent volunteers along with numerous former students from WHS enjoyed a great time on a beautiful sunny day. It was close to zero degrees all day with the hot sun shining and plenty of fun and laughter. Each class was divided up into two groups and they were able to take part in at least four different stations that were spread throughout the school grounds. There were a total of 15 stations.
Our theme this year was “Inclusion for All” and we started the day off with a school assembly in the gymnasium where we watched the classic video by Garth Brooks “Standing Outside the Fire”. A powerful message was clearly sent by the video on the importance of acceptance of others and the need to persevere and be resilient in anything that you do. Up next the Grade 2s sang a song called “Everyone Belongs” which keyed in on the importance of diversity of all and the need to celebrate our uniqueness. The song had the words on the screen so the entire student body sang with the Grade 2s. They did a fabulous job and their message was strong and genuine. The last video presentation was called “Ian.” It was a silent film that focused in on the importance of accepting others. A young boy in a wheelchair struggles to be accepted by others and in the end all of the other kids in the playground come to his aid and accept him. The message was powerful and left all of us wanting to be happy for all children in the world. The assembly ended with a simple message “Do the Right Thing and have some Fun today!”
A very impressive turnout of WHS students who volunteered their time either assisting with a station or supervising a group. It warms the heart when so many students want to come back to WES to help out.
Huge WES STAR salute goes out to Katherine Peterson and her crew of fine volunteer ladies from WEPA for cutting up all of the fruits and vegetables for our healthy refueling snacks after our activities. They also assisted in serving for the entire day. Wow! We, at WES, understand the importance of all volunteers in our school and truly do appreciate it.
Thank you to all parent volunteers for assisting with the stations and being group leaders.
The final thank you goes out to the students and staff of WES for their love of life and fun in the snow. It is nice to all come together and enjoy some beautiful weather and fellowship and continue to model the importance of inclusion for all.
See you in the gym,
