National Indigenous Peoples Day 2022 at WES

National Indigenous Peoples Day 2022 at WES

To acknowledge National Indigenous Peoples Day, Wainwright Elementary School hosted Cree Agency Drum Group, lead by Shawn Waskahat, along with Elder Lena Waskahat, and presenters for our cultural stations of bannock and beading. We would like to thank Kevin John for helping organize the events of the day.

WES started the day watching Cree Agency Drum Group perform various traditional dances including hoop dancing, men's traditional dance, and women’s traditional dance. We then gathered again to participate in a birthday round dance for kids that have birthdays within a week, and a traditional round dance with everyone in the school.

Following the dancing students broke into stations to learn about bannock making and the meaning behind beading.

We hope the students and staff of WES enjoyed learning about Indigenous culture.

Thank you again to Kevin John, Shawn Waskahat, Lena Waskahat, Tracy Lanza, Ruth Semeniuk, Elaina John, Tirza Lanza, Debbie Semeniuk, Hannah Semeniuk, Wendy Gallant, and Arlene Folk for teaching WES about Indigenous culture and traditions.

From your Indigenous Day committee,
Mrs. Ballas, Mrs. Chaulk, and Mrs. Munn
