Terry Fox Run 2024

Terry Fox Run 2024

National Terry Fox School Run Day Alive and Well for its 20th Year at WES

Our students participated in the annual Terry Fox Run/Walk day on a windy cool morning which started out at the PMM parking lot and followed down 2nd Avenue turning right at the Prairie Rose Center and then left along Railway Avenue.

Our students were decked out in our Leader in Me t-shirts and the rainbow of colors could be seen from a distance.  We enjoyed the walk and many classrooms read books or watched DVDs regarding Terry and his legacy of hope.

Terry’s mission when he dipped his foot in the Atlantic Ocean in St. John’s Newfoundland was to raise a million dollars for cancer research.  It started off slow but by the time he reached Toronto his Marathon of Hope was starting to buzz.  Terry continued running a marathon a day - 26.2 miles per day along his journey to make it across Canada.  Terry had to stop his quest in Thunder Bay but his legacy lives on each and every year in Canada and over 30 other countries across the world.  In total his mission to raise a million dollars is reaching close to a billion dollars now. ($850 million).

We, at WES, are very proud of our students who did not complain and completed their little trek of either 2.5 km or 5 km.  Our students could be seen laughing and enjoying themselves.  A couple fell, dusted themselves off and continued along the route embodying the theme of this year “No Matter What”.

Huge salute to BSS and WHS who always step up and coordinate this effort with us so that our students can continue Terry’s legacy - he was and is the true definition of being a hero to all.

We will be excited at WES to celebrate our 20th year banner at our next assembly in October and continue to proudly display our banners and flags in our gymnasium.

Feeling very proud.

Mr. Mitchell
